Mop Philosophy Monday

Did you have a good Christmas week?  We've been tucking in like Tucking In Champions.  MrBP took the opportunity to polish up the copper pots after our big Christmas dinner.  I think he does a better job than anyone, how about you?
I put the brandy away.  We're all sad about it!
A variation of Nigella's North American Salad.
I substitute pomegranate seeds for the cranberries.
Greens, wild rice, turkey and a shallot vinaigrette.
I've eaten several kilos of turkey, I can't eat any more: no way.  Well maybe more of this salad, inspired by Nigella of course.

Look, you can see for yourself that Santa brought me a new dish scrubber.
It wasn't all business in that stocking, he did throw in some Marron Glace.
Candied Chestnuts.
Santa brought new boardgames of the Ticket To Ride variety: the American version as well as Nordic Countries, and Old Rascal bought the Europe version as a gift to his sisters... I highly recommend this game.  We've spent many happy hours playing around the dining room table since Christmas.

I've been wearing this Brora stole around the house non-stop.
It is a neutral grey with subtle bits of embroidered colour, I like it over black.
I think it would be fun to do an outfit post for New Year's Eve, what do you think?  We're going to a dinner party and I haven't decided in any way on what to wear... it's going to be last minute, we should prep together.  Champers tomorrow in front of the clothes cupboard, what do you think?

Frock Philosophy Year End

I've been looking at my frock situation with a curious eye after last week's extreme closet purge.  What criteria am I applying to clothing these days?  What is it exactly that is deciding which frocks exit and which ones remain?

Fabric

As you know I am very picky about fabric.  If an item has some sort of lining that feels slippery, off it goes.  If the fabric itself is full of man-made fibres it's not going to breathe properly and I won't be able to stand wearing it.  It's almost like fabric claustrophobia.
My favourite fabrics are silk, silk interlock (a jersey which is slightly stretchy and doesn't wrinkle), cotton, linen and cashmere.  I've been editing out any items that don't fit into my fabric criteria as I just don't end up wearing them... this is why my wardrobe has become quite a bit smaller!
I have added a couple of things in this year and surprisingly these items are from Tory Burch.
Tory Burch does some of her frocks in that gorgeous silk interlock, this fabric might be my favourite (at least for a dress) and I just discovered it this year.  (I believe Diane Von Furstenberg designs some of her dresses in this fabric as well.)

Tory Burch dress in silk interlock jersey.
Manolo Blahnik dark brown slingback pumps.
I bought the patterned dress above just before Christmas when it finally went to sale.  I love the art deco inspired print and the subtle colour palette.  I am moving away from prints with the exception of very bold botanicals or leopard prints... it's just what my eye is lighting on these days.
The silk jersey is a dream to wear, it is so comfortable and luxurious on the skin.

MrBP bought me a leopard print brown and navy Tory Burch dress this past summer which I also partner with those Manolo's... this dress is constructed of rayon so it isn't as comfortable.
I'll continue to wear it as I love the print and the fit but I do require a slip underneath to avoid that "chew my arm off" feeling.

I gave most of my older dresses away in my recent Frocktastic Purge but I did keep two in black.
Ancient JCrew shift dress in wool with silk lining.
Made in the USA
This ancient shift dress is so comfortable, and for $35 on ebay it was the Deal Of The Year.  I had it tailored to fit perfectly and I wear it all the time.
Leopard print silk taffeta jacket by Red Valentino.
I like it with my leopard print jacket.
The Salvatore Ferragamo black pumps were another good buy this year though there was no deal.  I find them to be the perfect black dress shoe however so the cost-per-wear on them is already looking pretty good.
The other dress that "made the cut" was another ebay find, this time a silk frock by Miu Miu.  This dress was made in Italy and has a full and flouncy skirt that comes to the knee.  I almost always wear it with my black cropped Brora cardigan.

At this point I could justify adding in a couple of more frocks, and if I'm looking for more of that luscious Tory Burch silk interlock jersey I have a couple of options during the current sale (with an extra 25% discount with free express shipping to Canada).

 Colour Story

I've finally figured out that I grow tired of a colour story after approximately 3 months.  All fall and early winter I was wearing shades of brown with corresponding accessories and I am so tired of that colour palette.  I've put my brown things away along with some of the purples and golds... just now I am attracted to black and navy.
"Hopper" boots from La Canadienne
This could have something to do with the fact that my new winter boots are in a sturdy black suede with full black shearling lining.
Brora beret in french navy and black.
Brora cashmere stole in black.
Of course it can't be a coincidence that my Christmas present from MrBP also fits this theme!
Brora Navy Alpaca Coat

The navy alpaca is super-warm and perfect for the cold we'll be facing for the next 3 months.
Brora did one of their beautiful Liberty cotton linings.
The coat has a neat, tailored fit, my regular size fit me perfectly though in the online reviews I noticed many women were sizing up.  I have a narrow shoulder span which accounts for the size 8 fitting so well.
Look at the cozy alpaca.
I'm planning another closet edit this week.  As you may know I keep the items I currently wear in my small bedroom cupboard while the rest is stored in my storage closet.  This system works really well for me as I can see everything at any given time.  It will also allow me to be ruthless with the next edit as I have everything hanging up in that storage closet just now.
My last edit of 25 items included emptying out two drawers of clothes I had referred to as "the archives"... or should I say "archives of a hoarder"?  No more storing things away for use at some later date, if something isn't being worn now or anytime during the upcoming four seasons it should really go to a better home... before it dates itself completely and is no use to anyone.
Would you like me to photograph my next edit with notes on criteria, fit and colour story?  Planning any edits yourself?

Mop Philosophy Monday

Well here we are, two days until Christmas.  The excitement is palpable!
I've been using my Christmas dishes these last few days.  I mean, if not now then when?

I organized the Breakfast Cupboard.  The Rascals drive me crazy, tell me if you think this is normal: they have one serving of cereal out of a box and then leave the whole thing to languish and stale.  Isn't that wasteful?
No more boxed cereal for Those Rascals.  No way, from now on it's All Granola All The Time.
I made Jamie Oliver's recipe (well, it's a variation) and it's quite delicious.
4 cups rolled oats
1 cup raw sunflower seeds
1 cup raw sesame seeds
1 cup walnuts
(chop the nuts in your food processor for a few seconds)
1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
1 cup dried sour cherries
1 cup dried sour apricots
Mix up all of the ingredients...

 ...then fill your jars.
Yes you've missed the toasting-in-the-oven bit!
What you want to do is toast a handful in a dry skillet just before you eat it, then drizzle on some honey and add some milk.  Voila delicious warm granola!
That Jamie Oliver is just too adorable.

I was planning to wear this silk blouse to church today, I think it's very Sunday Best-ish:
But I was foiled by The Ice Storm 2013.
The tree outside my window.
Remember that dress I told you about?
It arrived and I love it.
I decided I had better trade out an item in my wardrobe if I was going to add a new dress, one-in-one-out and all...
Well guess what I edited out 25 ITEMS.  It was an epic cull of my fancy dress storage cupboard!  Very similar to The Coat Purge of 2013 but in fact more extreme.
Where did it all go?  To my young friend Meg who loves clothes and is a medical doctor just starting her residency... everything fit her and I know she'll get great use out of it.  It pleases me no end to think of her wearing those clothes.
I think I'll get to more de-cluttering after Christmas, with the New Year creeping up on us it seems like just the time.
How is your pre-Christmas Monday going?  Any last minute preparations?

The Custom of the Country

Curious as to the next selection for the Mop Philosophy Book Club?
The Custom of the Country was first published by Edith Wharton in 1913, telling a story of social ambition and American marriage through the character of Undine Spragg.
I've read most of Edith Wharton's books, but not this one.  It seems I'm in for a treat and I hope you'll join me!
Read what Margaret Drabble has to say about the novel here.
How about another short essay, Bride and Conqueror, written by Leonard Cassuto for the WSJ, right here.

Just for fun, have a look at Vogue's feature on Edith Wharton's life at The Mount, published last year with stunning photographs and an essay written by the brilliant Colm Toibin.

I hope that you'll join me in reading The Custom of the Country.

You can find it free on Project Gutenberg RIGHT HERE.

We'll discuss it on Saturday February 1st.

I hope you have an excellent Friday.  I'll see you over the weekend, we have a dress to discuss!

Mop Philosophy Monday

December Flowers
I think Kelly at the Flower Shop outdid herself with the monthly arrangement, so festive and merry yet still incorporating my favourite colour in a rose: that gorgeous blush-coral-gold.
Go on Laugh Out Loud.
A good friend sent me some new cocktail napkins for Christmas, and she had them monogrammed: LOL.  They are now my favourite and best.

As you may remember there have been years when the state of my garden shed quite vexed me with indecision at Christmas time: to decorate or not to decorate?
I think it looks festive enough.  I spent last week organizing the interior instead, it's shiny as a button in there.

We finally drove out to the tree farm to find our one and only:
Christmas Tree 2013
We are embracing the decorations made during the kindergarten years: may they never fell apart.
They are a bit delicate, made of popsicle sticks, cotton fluff and variously sized googly eyes.

Every year I find that there is one angel in particular I'm drawn to, this year it's the blue and yellow herald angel.
Herald Angel
Don't worry, I have been up to some foolishness.
Bought a frock for New Year's Eve.
Tory Burch Dagny Dress
Of course I like to balance tomfoolery with sensible tasks.  Now that I am very happily making my own laundry detergent I decided to turn my attention to the dishwasher detergent.

You can make your own dishwasher detergent, it's easy as anything.

This is the recipe I used:

1 cup of washing soda
1 cup of Borax
1/4 cup of citric acid
1/2 cup of kosher salt
No hideous packaging required.
Mix it all up and use 1 tablespoon per load.

Well, I know the proof is in the pudding so I took some pictures of my shiny clean dishes, compliments of my homemade dishwasher detergent.
Clean

Clean

Clean
Aren't clean things so pretty?  There's something about being able to make my own detergents that really pleases me.  I have a shelf full of washing soda, borax, kosher salt and citric acid packets stored in my laundry room.  When I run out of laundry or dishwasher detergent I can make my own, I'm free of the tyranny of the grocery store packaging and prices, it makes me feel quite independent.  That's always a good feeling, isn't it?
I hope your week is off to a brilliant start and that you are feeling happy and merry.
